RAGBRAI rolls through Spencer July 23
April 6, 2017
This is the first of a series of weekly updates from the 2017 Spencer RAGBRAI Committee leading up the July 23 overnight stay in Spencer. Look for the weekly updates and information exclusively on the Entertainment page in future Daily Reporter editions.
In case you haven’t heard, RAGBRAI, The Register’s Annual Great Bike Ride Across Iowa, is making an overnight stop in Spencer for the first time in 10 years. For one night, July 23, the people of Spencer will share our community, our homes and ourselves with riders from all over the United States and beyond.
July is a long ways away, isn’t it? Though Sunday, July 23, seems a long ways from now, it’s really just 106 days or less than 16 weeks from today. Behind the scenes, there are a host of committee members and volunteers already planning for the influx of food vendors, entertainment, and of course riders who will enjoy all Spencer has to offer. From signs, to welcome committees, to city ambassadors and volunteer recruitments, there are tasks and time tables and more that all need to be organized and ready to greet 20,000 plus visitors to “Kick up their wheels!” when they arrive on the fairgrounds.
The RAGBRAI Committee has already announced their headline entertainment, The Johnny Holm Band, as well as the 2017 logo, “Kick Up Your Wheels!” A website, www.spencerragibrai.com has been created to help keep the local community and RAGBRAI riders all up to date with new announcements, schedules and volunteer needs. Additionally, you can follow Spencer RAGBRAI on Facebook for up to date information, RAGBRAI podcasts and more.
So far so good, right? Yes; the Spencer Committee is definitely on track to make RAGBRAI rider’s stay the best it can be, but your help is needed! Volunteers make the wheel go round at each RAGBRAI stop, and Spencer will be no exception. Even if you aren’t available to volunteer the day of the event, there are plenty of things to do on many of the committees leading up to “the big day.” Volunteers are so important to making the weekend a success, that there is even a committee set up just to organize them! From hosting a team or group of riders at your home, to helping welcome or say “Fair-well” to the riders as they leave town for Algona, or creating signs and counting T-shirt orders, there is something for everyone and every age level.
In the upcoming weeks, information will be shared through multiple avenues. We encourage you to follow along with the process, and most importantly get involved. Please continue to watch the website, Facebook page and especially this column for specific requests and updates! Spencer has a reputation of being one of the best RAGBRAI stops and we want to make sure that as this year’s riders leave town they can’t wait to come back and visit, even if it’s not on two wheels.
