Dig out your bikes, boots and bandanas
April 13, 2017
The great Iowa hospitality is one of the first things RAGBRAI riders mention when they talk about their weeklong experience riding across our state. The Hospitality Committee is talked about as the “heart” of the event, and each town’s cheerleaders. From community spirit, to welcome ambassadors and decorating the town, to T-shirt sales, the Hospitality Committee has a lot to do!
Fitting with this year’s theme “Kick Up Your Wheels!” The Hospitality Committee, led by Jill Barr and Anji Bennett, have started planning for a rootin’-tootin’ good time! To make their plans a reality, the team needs your help. Volunteers are an important part of this committee’s tasks before and during the RAGBRAI event.
The Hospitality Committee is in charge of making the first and last impression that RAGBRAI riders have in Spencer. Volunteers for this job can jump in with both boots right away! Barr and Bennett are in need of donations of old bikes, boots, bandanas and other western-themed items to give the riders the best “How ya doin’ y’all?” that Spencer can give. Items can be dropped off at the Spencer Chamber, 1805 Highway Blvd., from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. Monday through Friday. Hospitality will also need volunteers to make that impression on July 23 to say welcome and early on July 24 to say thank you for staying with us!
The team will also need goodwill ambassadors and guides. These volunteers help welcome riders and guide them to Spencer’s many activities. Do you love all things Spencer, enjoy helping people and want to meet riders from all over? This job as a “walking information center” is the right job for you!
With all of the options for volunteering, there is something for everyone. Whether it is helping with planning and constructing decorations and the theme leading up to the day, or being there to help riders on July 23, there is a spot for every helping hand to make Spencer RAGBRAI a great event. If you are interested in helping on the Hospitality Committee or any other Spencer RAGBRAI committee, visit the website, www.spencerragbrai.com and fill out the form, or stop by the chamber and let them know!
Want to learn more? In the upcoming weeks, information will be shared through multiple avenues. We encourage you to follow along with the process, and most importantly get involved! Please continue to watch the website www.spencerragbrai.com, Facebook page and especially this column for specific requests and updates! Spencer has a reputation of being one of the best RAGBRAI stops and we want to make sure that as this year’s riders leave town they can’t wait to come back and visit, even if it’s not on two wheels.
