Countdown to RAGBRAI Spencer overnight stay

We’re just a few days away from welcoming visitors from around the United States and around the world to Spencer. RAGBRAI will roll into our community for the fifth time on Sunday, July 23, and it's the hope of the Spencer committee to showcase all the elements that make Spencer a great place to live, play and fulfill your career goals.

Opportunities like this don’t come about very often, a time when we can display our community spirit and a willingness to promote our quality of life.

As these visitors trek across town you never know when someone will take an interest in exploring a business or industrial venture. At a time when we’ve faced some retail and manufacturing challenges, we need to take every opportunity to show the world what we have to offer ... a superb educational system, affordable housing, recreational and wellness facilities, an expanded bike and river trail system, and most importantly a positive community spirit.

Please use this opportunity to welcome our visitors no matter where you might encounter them. Although we only get to host them for a short time we can make the best use of those hours highlighting this area we call home.

On another subject, for whatever reason, we’ve struggled getting volunteers to host this event, much more than we’ve experienced in the four previous overnight stops.

If you haven’t stepped up to assist one of several committees, please do so now. It’s not too late. Simply go to www.spencerragbrai.com and hit the volunteer button. It only takes a few seconds to submit the online form. A minimum of 100 volunteers are still needed for the second shift of the Beverage Garden to Hospitality, Campgrounds and more. If you have any questions please email volunteers@spencerragbrai.com and we’ll get back to you promptly.

Even if you can’t volunteer, you can still show your support and welcome the thousands of riders by lining the bike route into Spencer. Bring a lawn chair and line the miles of roadway into Spencer all while encouraging the bikers, waving and shouting “welcome to Spencer.”

C’mon Spencer, “Kick Your Wheels Up,” This is our time to shine, not a time to whine. Take advantage of the opportunity and show the world the great assets we have in your hometown and invite them to come back and further explore the “Success City of Iowa.”
