Serving up unforgettable fun
June 16, 2017
We all know that Spencer is a very generous and proud community. It is one of the many reasons we moved here 17 years ago and have stayed. We are great with great reason — we care. On Sunday, July 23, we can show over 10,000 riders just how great we are when RAGBRAI rolls into our community for the day. This is our time to shine and I have no doubt that we will. They will be amazed by our community spirit and generous hospitality. Many of you are volunteering in many ways, whether it’s in a working role at the fairgrounds or offering up lodging to the many riders. This is exactly what is needed — your hospitality. It takes our whole community to put our best foot forward as we host the RAGBRAI riders.
I am asking you to consider helping at the Beverage Garden. The Beverage Garden will be adjacent to the bevy of entertainment that will be on display at the Clay County Fairgrounds. There is no admission to the entertainment, it is offered free through the many generous sponsors for everyone to enjoy! The Beverage Garden does require the largest number of volunteers with a minimum of 150 volunteers needed. I have no doubt that we will get the volunteers; it’s what we do and do it well. When there is a need in our community, we rise to help. So that’s what I am asking for now. Please consider giving your time to help in the Beverage Garden. There are multiple opportunities to help: we need volunteers to help check IDs and wristband of those 21 and over, sell tickets, and serve beer. We also need help setting up on Saturday and tearing down on Monday morning. We will offer a one-hour server and ID training for all volunteers through Compass Pointe and Doll Distributing. These dates are June 30 and July 14 at the Compass Pointe offices at 1900 Grand Ave. Please use entrance 15. Times to choose from are 3 p.m. and 6 p.m. There will also be a training at the Events Center on July 12 at noon and 5 p.m. You can sign up to volunteer at spencerragbrai.com.

Keep up to date with Spencer RAGBRAI information. We encourage you to follow along with the process, and most importantly get involved! Please continue to watch the website www.spencerragbrai.com, Facebook page and especially this column for specific requests and updates! Spencer has a reputation of being one of the best RAGBRAI stops and we want to make sure that as this year’s riders leave town they can’t wait to come back and visit, even if it’s not on two wheels.
The Beverage Garden is a fun area to help at and you will meet so many new people! RAGBRAI riders love to converse and relax with the communities they are riding through. They are a fun group and are truly appreciative of our efforts. Please join me in showing how much we appreciate them passing through Spencer and let’s give them an unforgettable stop. We want them to feel welcome now and in the future!
