This is part of a series of weekly updates from the 2017 Spencer RAGBRAI Committee leading up the July 23 overnight stay in Spencer. Look for the weekly updates and information exclusively on the Entertainment page in future Daily Reporter editions.
In just two months, over 12,000 bicycle enthusiasts from around the world will converge on Spencer for an overnight stop on the 45th annual RAGBRAI trek across Iowa. Preparations for the Spencer event on July 23 are well underway, led by an all-volunteer team consisting of four highly qualified co-chairs along with 18 committee chairs challenged to arranging everything from campgrounds and sanitation to transportation and hospitality.
Volunteers are key to the success of hosting RAGBRAI and right now the Spencer community needs your help. As plans materialize, it is estimated that 500 or more local volunteers will be needed before, during and the day after the event.
“We need commitments from those volunteers now,” said Bill Campbell, executive director of the Spencer Chamber of Commerce. “Recruit your friends, family, neighbors and acquaintances to join the effort. We are compiling a list of volunteers now to begin the process of matching them to their desired position.”
“This is a wonderful opportunity to showcase Spencer, its progressive spirit and its exceptional quality of life,” Campbell said.
There are many ways to volunteer for the Spencer RAGBRAI team, the easiest of which is to go to the Spencer website, www.spencerragbrai.com. Simply click on residents, then on volunteer to fill out a submission form that details the area in which you would like to volunteer your time. From that list, individuals will be contacted and placed in time slots.
Another opportunity to show your support is by attending the Spencer RAGBRAI town meeting on Tuesday, May 23, at 5 p.m. at The Stables on the Clay County Fairgrounds. Committee personnel will be on hand to answer questions and volunteer signup forms will be available. If you are unable to attend the town hall, all volunteer opportunities will be highlighted here over the next few weeks, giving you a better idea of what is needed and where you may want to pitch in.
One area that is in high need right now is housing. Right now more than 1,500 of the RAGBRAI riders are looking for private camping or home locations. Anyone in the Spencer area can help! You can offer parking for a motor home, yard area for camping, floor space, or beds. Hosts are not required to transport or feed riders and are not allowed to charge for accommodations. This is a terrific opportunity to meet people from across the United States. Committee volunteers will match riders to available housing prior to July 23.

Keep up to date with Spencer RAGBRAI information. We encourage you to follow along with the process, and most importantly get involved. Please continue to watch the website www.spencerragbrai.com, Facebook page and especially this column for specific requests and updates! Spencer has a reputation of being one of the best RAGBRAI stops and we want to make sure that as this year’s riders leave town they can’t wait to come back and visit, even if it’s not on two wheels.
